Ramon Castro, a decorated war veteran and journeyman electrician and organizer with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), was honored at a ceremony last week after being named the California 56th Assembly District’s Veteran of the Year.  Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia was on hand to present the award at the Veterans Recognition Luncheon, held at the Sacramento Convention Center.

Castro served in the marine corps between 1996 and 2003, including a tour in Kuwait as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom.  During his military career Castro earned the rank of Sergeant and received several letters of commendation: the Navy & Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Iraqi Freedom Campaign Medal, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, the Meritorious Mast, and the Rifle Marksmanship Badge.  In 2003 he was honorably discharged.

Castro returned to his hometown of Bawley and began a career as an electrician through the Helmets to Hardhats program.  After completing his five-year apprenticeship he became a certified journeyman electrician.  During this time he began to help returning veterans transition back into civilian life while working with local workforce development agencies to recruit veterans to the trades.  Castro also helped create a Veteran Informational Seminar which helps returning veterans access their benefits and provides them with details on opportunities available to them through the state and local government.

Speaking of Castro’s success in his civilian career, Assemblymember Garcia said:

“Ramon has valiantly fought for our country while serving in the United Stated Marine Corps, and has continued to dedicate his life by helping local veterans in the Imperial County.  I applaud his honorable and faithful service.”

Castro’s original Veterans Informational Seminar was so successful that a second larger version was held this past weekend in the city of Imperial, according to the Imperial Valley News.  Castro continues to work with Helmets to Hardhats and is a member of the City of Brawley’s Veterans Honor Wall Committee.

Speaking at the event, Castro thanked his fellow veterans for their continued support:

“I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for the brave men and women that served with me in Operation Iraqi Freedom.  I’m truly humbled to receive this award today from Assemblyman Garcia. Simply lending a helping hand, providing a shoulder to lean on or listening without judging can make a world of difference to our Veterans.”
