Last week in Laredo, Texas, drivers and dockworkers at Con Way Freight voted to join Teamsters Local 657.  Laredo is located on the U.S.-Mexico border and is the busiest inland port in the United States with over 7,000 trucks crossing the border each day.  It was the first organizing victory at the giant less-than-truckload (LTL) carrier.  In total there will be 113 workers in the bargaining unit.  The vote was a close one at 55-49.

Frank Perkins, President of San Antonio-based Local 657 called the vote, “a great victory for the workers at Con-Way.”

“We hope this campaign spreads,” he added.  “These workers are seeking fair wages, respect on the job and job security. They also want to have a pension and improved health care coverage.”

The vote came just 24 hours after Con Way officials ordered an anti-union meeting with the facility’s workers, which violated labor law.  The Teamsters have indicated that they may sue the company for slander.  The video below shows the meeting in question.

The Teamsters Joint Council 42 in Southern California has also filed with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) to conduct union elections at Con Way facilities in Los Angeles, Santa Fe Springs, and San Fernando, California.  The Teamsters have also filed on behalf of workers to have a union election at various FedEx locations.  Beginning in late summer, petitions were filed on behalf of workers in Harrisburg, PA and at the company’s Indianapolis Terminal.
