IBEW Endorses Tom Wolf. Does He Have the PA Gov Race Locked Up?

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) has endorsed Democratic challenger Tom Wolf in the race for Governor of Pennsylvania.

Citing a record of bringing good-paying, high-tech jobs to the state, the union which represents over 40,000 workers in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania unanimously agreed to get behind Wolf.  In a statement, IBEW Third District Vice President Donald Siegel explained the choice, saying, “As a business owner who has focused on creating living wage jobs here in Pennsylvania, Wolf understands that good jobs must be lawmakers’ top priority.”

Following the endorsement, Wolf thanked the IBEW:

“I am pleased to have the support of the Electrical Workers, and look forward to working with them as we head toward November.  Under Tom Corbett’s failed policies, our schools are suffering, our economy is stagnant, and middle-class families are shouldering an unfair burden. The people of Pennsylvania are ready for a fresh start because they know it’s time to restore funding to our schools and rebuild our economy so it works for everyone.”

Since winning the Democratic primary, Wolf, a former York businessman, has held a substantial lead in the polls (20+ points at one point).  More recent polling, such as Magellan strategies’, shows Corbett gaining momentum, though.   A New York Times/CBS shows Corbett just 9 points behind.

But as Keystone Politics notes, the method used in recent polls is a bit dubious.  Regardless of these polls’ respective viability, Corbett still appears far enough behind Wolf for progressives to feel safe.

After all, Corbett has had an abysmal term. Since he became governor, Pennsylvania has fallen from 7th to 49th in job creation.  Over 350,000 Pennsylvanians are currently out of work.  Corbett’s massive cuts to education are still having a negative effect throughout the state and while he has promised to restore funding he has yet to make good on the promise.  Education is a major issue for many voters, especially in Philadelphia where budget woes have created chaos for the public school system.

A recent ad from PA Families First details the Corbett education cuts and the effect they’ve had on the state’s economy.  It also suggests that Corbett has failed to take advantage of the boom of business resulting from the Marcellus Shale.

In working class Pennsylvania, Corbett has worn out his welcome by endorsing failed anti-worker legislation. His plan to privatize the state’s liquor and wine stores and replace their unionized workers fell flat.  His massive education cuts have drawn the ire of teachers and students alike. Siegel touches on Corbett’s anti-union history:

“Instead of working with business and labor to get our state’s economy back on track and attract new jobs and investment, Corbett has focused on pushing divisive anti-worker legislation that hurts the middle class.  Working people have been battered by this administration and its allies in the legislature.  It was time for us as a union to come together to fight for change in Harrisburg and Tom Wolf is the man who can help make that change happen.”

Recent odds from Nate Silver’s FiveThirtyEight give Tom Wolf nearly a 100 percent chance of winning the race.

  1. NEVER EVER believe a poll that has your candidate “safely” ahead. That’s how they lose by small margins. And Corbett is running sleaze ads to push the buttons of all the rabidly ill-informed.
