GO FIGURE: Anti-Union ABC Names Anti-Union Rep. Guinta “Legislator of the Year”

New Hampshire Congressman Frank Guinta’s desire to appease his campaign donors and push construction tradesmen and women off the cliff has earned him the title of “Legislator of the Year” from none other than the staunchly anti-union Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC).

According to New Hampshire Labor News, since accepting the ABC’s $20,000 donation, Guinta has waged war against Project Labor Agreements (PLAs) and Building Trades unions. Last February, he unsuccessfully added Amendment No. 166 to H.R. 1, the “Full Year Continuing Appropriations Act of 2011.″ That amendment would have disallowed any funds to be spent on a project that was guided by a PLA.

He has championed the Far Right’s less-than-true claims that PLAs discourage competition. In reality, PLAs mandate fair wages, safety standards, local and diversity hiring provisions, and other community benefits that the ABC and its pals are fervently opposed to.

From the ABC’s statement on Guinta’s “win”:

“Congressman Guinta is a great friend of ABC, the merit shop construction industry and a strong ally in Congress,” said 2011 ABC National Chairman Michael J. Uremovich, president of Great Lakes Energy Consultants, LLC, Manhattan, Ill. “We appreciate all the work he has done to help advance the ideals of free enterprise and open competition.”

“Representing New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District, Guinta is a member of the House Budget Committee, Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, and the Government Reform and Oversight Committee, a panel that oversees matters important to ABC and its 23,000 members, including the elimination of government-mandated project labor agreements (PLAs) and the investigation of burdensome government regulations. In February, Guinta filed an amendment to the continuing resolution legislation that banned funding for federal government construction projects that included PLAs.”

Congressman Frank Guinta is the stereotype that the ABC strives to support. Increasingly, Congressman are elected to office to do what’s best for their donors, not their constituents. This is a prime example of that trend.
