Romney Attacks Santorum for Supporting the Davis-Bacon Act

This is a guest post by Russ Breckenridge, Senior Legislative Representative of the United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters (UA)…

During the Arizona Republican Debate last night on CNN, Mitt Romney hammered Rick Santorum for previously voting in support of the Davis Bacon Act, the 1931, Republican-created law establishing prevailing wages on public works projects.

As if Romney’s support of a National Right-to-Work (for less) law and his desire to repeal President Obama’s Executive Order encouraging federal agencies to use Project Labor Agreements wasn’t enough, now he is officially on record opposing Davis Bacon. Mitt Romney also spent a lot of time last night slamming the UAW and Teachers’ unions. Oh yeah, and he wants to defund the National Labor Relations Board. Nice, huh?

Mitt Romney, the guy who refers to us all as “Union Stooges,” is clearly no friend to working families.

TRANSCRIPT OF THE DAVIS BACON EXCHANGE:

CNN Host, John King: Governor Romney, I’m wondering if that answer satisfied you? Just in recent days you said this, quote, “If you want a fiscal conservative, you can’t vote for Rick Santorum because he’s not.” Did he answer your questions there?

ROMNEY: Well I’m looking at his [Santorum] historic record, which voting for raising the debt ceiling five different times without voting for compensating cuts. Voting to keep in place Davis-Bacon, which cost about $100 billion over — over 10 years. A whole series of votes. Voting to fund Planned Parenthood, to expand the Department of Education. During his term in the Senate, spending grew by some 80 percent of the federal government. But I — but I want to respond to Gilbert’s question, which I think is a critical one.

  1. I am a proud union Laborer of Local#231 Pekin Il. I just watched Mitt Romney on CSPAN talking to his suporters in Detroit how the Davis Bacon Act is a drain on our economy and basically that unions cripple our country. Excuse me Mr. Romney I am a single parent and by Laws such as the Davis Bacon Act, and other prevailing wage laws this hepls me support my daughter and not become a drain on he economy. This is basically a wage on war with my very way of supporting my family, only to benefit his fellow fat cat supporters. This is an outrage and we union brothers and sisters must speak out against his horrible person trying to ruin our way of life.
