Union Pension Investment in Energy Efficient Infrastructure Provides Hope that there Will be Good Paying and Meaningful Jobs in Industries that are Important to the Revitalization of America

Labor unions are stepping up to the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) to invest public pension funds in energy efficient infrastructure projects. The move will create jobs while spearheading a movement to build up clean industries that tackle the dual challenges of climate change adjustment and putting people back to work.

According to Think Progress, after praising the union’s accomplishments, Bill Clinton praised building trades unions and others for seizing an opportunity that investment banks have ignored. Speaking about the partnership, former President Clinton went on to say of the union-pension fund partnerships “are America’s employment banks. This is a huge deal.”

The Unions stepped up to the challenge that Clinton laid before them earlier this summer at the CGI’s first summit focused solely on American issues. There, the AFL-CIO and American Federation Of Teachers (AFT) established goals to invest in energy efficient projects that could create long term sustainable jobs in the U.S. Since then, the unions have begun to partner with various other unions, such as SEIU, AFSCME, NEA and the Firefighters (IAFF). Since originally pledging $20 million the AFL-CIO has surpassed the amount and invested several hundred million dollars to projects around the nation. According to the CGI,

“This commitment, made by the AFL-CIO and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and developed in collaboration with the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) and Center for American Progress (CAP), encourages union pension fund managers and trustees to invest up to $10 billion in assets of working families into energy efficient infrastructure as an opportunity for America to create hundreds of thousands of jobs, develop new industries, enhance our global competitiveness, and reduce the threat of climate change.”

The CGI has encouraged American businesses to stimulate the economy by funding innovative programs that will help rebuild the infrastructure of the United States while building new industries that can provide long-term jobs to those left unemployed by the current recession. The Initiative also calls for a more educated workforce, demanding that those being placed into new industries be given rigorous and thorough training. Rebuilding America’s economy through clean industry is not a new idea but big oil’s control over policy-making has left the government unable to fund such projects. By finding new sources for funding, the CGI and labor unions have done what all the bankers and politicians could not: provide hope to Americans looking for work that there will be good paying and meaningful jobs in industries that are important to the revitalization of America.
