Brooklyn Bar Charges Women $0.77 for Every $1 Men Pay to Show Gender Gap Is “Some Shameful Shit”

To start a conversation about the gender pay gap, a Brooklyn bar last night offered women drinks at 77 cents on the dollar. That is the amount that women earn for every dollar men earn, according to the Department of Labor (the date was also 7/7).

The Way Station, a Prospect Heights bar previously known as the borough’s lone Doctor Who-themed bar, called the gender wage gap “some shameful shit.”

True that.

The bar’s owners explained their rationale in a promotional email: “Let’s level the playing field, even if it is just for one night. Women deserve better. Recognizing this discrepancy is just a start.”

Speaking to Metro New York, Way Station owner Andy Heidel said:

I have three sisters, half my customers are female and I feel it’s an important issue. A really amazing dialogue has started.  Twitter has been blowing up.  There are some haters out there, saying that Obama’s lying, but I get my numbers from the White House.”

Heidel added that he would like to see other Brooklyn bars recognize the pay gap and “show women they deserve better.”
