The U.S. Department of Labor announced that it has delivered to the state of Kentucky a National Emergency Grant totaling $2,774,736 to assist workers laid off by Comair.  The grant will be used by The Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet to provide support services and training for the affected workers.

More than 1,000 employees were laid off by Delta Air Lines when they ended commuter airline service at Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky International Airport in September of 2012.  At its peak, Comair employed 7,000 pilots, flight attendants and support personnel across the country.  In a statement announcing the grant, KY Gov. Steve Beshear said, “This grant provides Kentucky the opportunity to support and assist affected Comair employees so they can get the resources they need for education and training, career preparation and job search to achieve their ultimate goal of employment.”

Of the total amount, $1,356,574 will be released initially with the rest being dispersed if there is a need.  The grant will also help affected workers in Ohio and Indiana.  The region’s economy was clearly disrupted by the closure of the company last year.   Steve Stevens, president of the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, addressed the gravity of the matter:

These are people that have families,” Stevens said. “They spend money, and it will create an indirect impact from the revenue on spending. We will feel some of that. We will have to find places for them to be employed.”

Thanks to this grant, 350 workers may find retraining for a new job easier. Barbara Stewart, director of the Northern Kentucky Workforce Investment Board waxed confident in a statement saying, “This grant allows us to take the Comair employees who were laid off from point A to point Z and ultimately help them nail down a job.”
