LIUNA’s “Netroots and Work Boots” Rally Will Encourage Investment in the Middle Class, the Economy

Minnesota members of the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA) will team up with bloggers and activists from the 2011 Netroots Nation conference to fight back for good jobs by calling on leaders in Washington to invest in the basic needs of America and Minnesota, including roads, bridges and water resources. Joining them will be allies in Congress and other political, business and community leaders.

The rally will be held on the historic Stone Arch Bridge, which overlooks the I-35 W Bridge – a symbol of the dangers of failing to invest in our basic needs, and the possibilities that come with a modern transportation system.

Among those at Friday’s rally will be LIUNA members from across Minnesota. Many are among the nearly 1.4 million construction workers in the United States who are unemployed, and the 53,000 in Minnesota who have lost jobs since 2006. Meanwhile, the state Department of Transportation lists 1,120 bridges as structurally deficient, and state highways are projected to receive less than one-fourth the investment needed to keep up with demands over the next 20 years.
