Peoria, Illinois Construction Boom Estimated to Create 600,000 Man Hours on 6 Projects

A 90-acre field in East Peoria, Illinois that used to be home to a Caterpillar factory has sat idly since 1997. That is about to end when the swath of land becomes a bustling retail center. No one is more pleased with this news than the skilled workers who will spend the next year erecting the structures.

Six new projects will rise at one time, in fact, amounting to about $100 million in construction investment and upwards of 600,000 construction “man hours.” It is estimated that all tolled this will create 400 full-time construction jobs over the next year:

Ground will be broken soon, said Mayor David Mingus, on a new Target department store and the Hometown Community Bank, the three-story structure that will serve as new headquarters both for Morton Community Bank and Cullinan.

Site preparations have already begun for the Costco discount outlet that “we’re hopeful” will be open by November, Mingus said. The same work is underway for the six-story Holiday Inn Suites, which is to include an upscale restaurant.

Contract bidding is wrapping up and construction should begin this spring on the new Fondulac District Library, the total $9 million project for which district property taxpayers agreed to accept a small tax increase to produce $7 million of the cost.

Finally, Cullinan appears on schedule to produce tenants to fill 100,000 square feet of retail/commercial space to be built next to Target. That was a key requirement in the city’s revamped development agreement with Cullinan that was announced in December.

According to labor representatives, qualified workers are in abundance in the region:

“We’ve got plenty of folks” ready for the jobs, Helfers said. “Over the last two or three years, we’ve been averaging 30 percent unemployment across all the (building) trades.”
