Since 1936, Every GOP President Has Created Manufacturing Losses. Every Democrat? Gains.

Donald Trump and the GOP would have you believe they are the party to revive manufacturing in America. But they would be wrong.

Put plainly, the numbers don’t lie. Over the past 80 years, when Republicans held the oval office, manufacturing jobs decreased. When Democrats were in office, manufacturing jobs increased. It’s as simple as that, according to Bloomberg:

Manufacturing jobs increased under each of the seven Democrats and decreased under the six Republicans who became president during the past eight decades, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Even as U.S. employment expanded — as it did under every president since Franklin D. Roosevelt — manufacturing jobs declined only under Republican presidents.

The big winners were Harry Truman, John F. Kennedy, and Lyndon B. Johnson, who averaged increases above 20% across each of their presidencies.  The losers were Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and George W. Bush, who averaged decreases of 9% during their terms.

As for Trump’s harping about the “declines” during the Obama and Clinton years? The song remains the same:

The economy during Clinton’s two terms was the best of any modern president as measured by the record 20 million jobs created from 1993 through 2000. During the same period, the nation added 366,000 factory workers, a 2.2-percent increase, as gross domestic product expanded by an average of 4 percent annually.

Barack Obama inherited the worst economy of the past 80 years…Given the extent of the damage, the ensuing recovery…was pronounced. Some 806,000 manufacturing jobs have been created during his two terms, a 7 percent increase between the end of 2009 and last month. Total employment, meanwhile, rose 11.4 percent, or by almost 15 million new jobs.

The current candidates have different reputations on the issue, too. Hillary Clinton has promised “a $10 billion investment in ‘Make it in America’ partnerships” and a “crack down on companies that ship jobs and earnings overseas.” Trump, on the other hand, has broken every record in terms of…being exposed for outsourcing:

The scope of Trump-branded products made outside America is larger than has previously been reported — especially when that includes the clothing line named after Trump’s daughter, Ivanka, which is listed on the Trump Organization website as part of the Trump empire.

Thousands of items with the Trump name on them — furniture, shirts, shoes, salad bowls, even “Trump body soap,” and much of Ivanka’s growing jewelry and clothing line — have been made by companies, often paying Trump simply for the use of his name on their goods, that employ foreign workers.

His solution? Ignite a trade war that “could make a host of everyday products more expensive for Americans and ultimately trigger a recession.”.

When it comes to manufacturing, you can vote with your heart. Or you can vote for increased production of (historically proven, American-made) parts.
