Last week, two members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 1837 were honored for rescuing a man from a burning pickup truck in Bridgton, Maine. Central Maine Power lineworkers Andrew Grant and Paul Reynolds were awarded the highest commendation offered by the IBEW for their act of courage.

Grant and Reynolds happened upon the upended truck back in June. The vehicle had flipped on its side and caught fire after striking a telephone pole. Power lines were “barking and arcing.” The driver was still stuck inside:

After Reynolds struggled at first to break the window with a gloved hand, Grant grabbed a set of pliers to smash it and pulled the man out before the truck was fully engulfed in flames.
“We were at the right place at the right time,” Reynolds added.

As paramedics tended to the accident victim, Reynolds and Grant tended to the downed power lines to make the scene safe.

Grant and Reynolds say they “don’t feel like any heroes,” but they appreciate the acknowledgment from their union:

Their Brothers and Sisters in IBEW Local 1837…contacted the International Union to request the well-deserved recognition. Andrew Grant and Paul Reynolds received Lifesaver Award plaques, pins and letters of appreciation at a union executive board meeting in August.

Now it appears congratulations are in order for Grant and Reynolds. The Bridgton Police Department summed it up nicely in a Facebook post: “If not for their bravery and quick thinking,” the department wrote, “this story could have had a much different headline.”
