With the placement of a 10-ton spire atop the Wilshire Grand last Saturday, Downtown L.A.’s latest sky scraper became the tallest building in America west of the Mississippi River. The hotel and office complex is being built under a Project Labor Agreement and has created thousands of new jobs:

Members of Local 416 joined other union building and construction trades workers for a record-breaking continuous concrete pour into the base of the 73-story Wilshire Grand skyscraper in downtown Los Angeles.

[…] The Wilshire Grand is being built under an all-union project labor agreement with the Los Angeles/Orange Counties Building and Construction Trades Council. It’s generating thousands of jobs for members of building trades affiliated local unions. The project began with demolition of an existing building in fall 2012 and is expected to finish in 2016.

While it earned “tallest building in the west” status, the structure has yet to be completed. Still, the dimensions are already impressive:

Construction workers on Saturday placed a 10-ton spire atop the downtown Los Angeles skyscraper. The spire adds 160 feet to the 73-story building, making it 1,099 feet high. That’s 81 feet higher than nearby U.S. Bank Tower, which held the tallest building record since 1989.

Mayor Eric Garcetti highlighted the tower’s significance to the city of Los Angeles in comments made after the placement of the spire:

“The Wilshire Grand is an important part of the economic resurgence that is transforming L.A.’s skyline and has created 122,000 new jobs across our city,” Mayor Eric Garcetti said. “I congratulate the project team on reaching this milestone, and look forward to seeing the tallest building west of the Mississippi open its doors next year.”

[…] The $1 billion hotel/office complex, being developed by Korean Air, is about 85 percent finished.

The building is expected to open next March.
