Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton paid a visit to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) in Las Vegas last week. After taking a tour of Mojave Electric’s training facility, Clinton spoke at the IBEW Local 357 hall to a crowd of roughly 1,400. She stressed the importance of technical training and apprenticeship programs — like the one built between the local union and Mojave — that provide opportunities for young people and help to grow the middle class

“We need to invest in our young people and give them different paths besides four-year college to get ahead,” she said.

[…] She said a four-year college degree should not be the only path to the middle class, noting that by 2020, more than half of all job openings in the U.S. will not require a four-year degree. The apprenticeship program, which pays trainees and offers benefits, is one example of an alternate route.

Clinton also used the opportunity to attack her Republican opponent, Donald Trump. Recently, Trump International Hotel Las Vegas settled with the National Labor Relations Board in a lawsuit over the hotel’s alleged punishment of union-affiliated workers. Clinton criticized Trump for outsourcing production and stiffing contractors:

Clinton, speaking to reporters and electrical workers at Mojave Electric, said she took it “personally” that Trump outsourced many of his products to foreign factories and reports that he shortchanged contractors at his businesses.

[…] Clinton in her speech mixed in policy goals, like free access to community college and tax credits for businesses with paid apprenticeships, with attacks on Trump, calling him “temperamentally unfit to be commander in chief.”

Nevada’s six electoral votes are up for grabs this November. Polls show a close race in a state that has picked the presidential winner every year since 1972.
