For the second time in three years, a Boilermakers Local 169 member who joined the Detroit-based union through the Helmets to Hardhats program has won top honors at the National Apprenticeship Competition.  Jonathan Nevedal is his name.

Nevedal also helped bring home Team Honors for the Great Lakes region. He was joined by Milwaukee-based Local 107 member Trenton Styczynski. Two years ago, army veteran and Local 169 apprentice Christopher Opalewski received the top honor.

Local 169 issued a statement following Nevedal’s win:

Jon trained all summer for this competition both at the training center and on his own, and did an exceptional job of representing both Boilermaker Local 169 and the Great Lakes Region . Thank you Jon for all of your hard work and for making our local proud!

The competition, which was held at Local 456 in Rock Hill, North Carolina, consisted of a 10-hour limit written exam and three days of practical exercises including: tool identification and use, rigging, welding, arc gouging, tube rolling, burning, knots and reeving, and layout and fabrication.  Judges scored participants in overall knowledge, safety, and demonstrated skills.

In order to attend the National Apprenticeship Competition contestants had to win or finish second in their area competitions.

A list of past winners is provided by the Boilermakers National Apprenticeship Program.
