The Vogtle power plant construction project in Georgia has reached its predicted peak workforce of 5,000 workers according to Georgia Power. The current workforce is the largest at the nuclear plant since its first two reactors were erected in the mid-1980’s, but the numbers could swell again as the project continues towards completion.

Construction is being performed by a largely union workforce and is governed by a Project Labor Agreement (PLA).  Georgia Power’s reports show that the workforce grew at units 3 and 4 over the summer as two large components that will go inside the nuclear containment vessel are currently being constructed.  The components will eventually separate the reactor vessel room from the steam generators.

“Vogtle 3 and 4 is currently the largest job-producing project in Georgia,” Georgia Power spokesman Jacob Hawkins told the Augusta Chronicle. “As construction activities continue, we expect the size of the workforce to fluctuate accordingly and may at times pass the 5,000 mark.”

Hawkins notes that the original prediction for peak workforce participation will likely need to be exceeded to maintain safety standards.  To complete the current components crews have been working double shifts and weekends.

The Vogtle project has also recently hired ironworkers, welders, laborers, professional engineers and future operators for the finished reactors which are expected to come online in 2017 and 2018.
