Among Gov. Scott Walker’s reasons for enacting Act 10 was that collective bargaining made it too hard for him to hire and fire the right people.  But Walker is now facing a situation in which he cannot shake his administration of a bad employee, Act 10 or not.

The former employee, Steve Krieser, was removed from his post at the DMV after the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel revealed a Facebook rant by Kriesser that compared immigrants to Satan.  The rant, stunningly offensive even by Internet troll standards, was published in August of 2013:

You may see Jesus when you look at them,” Steven Krieser, assistant deputy secretary at the state Department of Transportation, wrote Tuesday regarding illegal immigrants. “I see Satan.”

Krieser wrote that a “stream of wretched criminals” is crossing the border without obstruction. These individuals, he said, “completely ruined” entire states and industries, breeding “the animus that many American citizens feel toward them.”
Walker’s response was swift and dramatic.

Less than two hours after his office was informed of the rant, Walker fired Krieser. He had been paid $96,628 a year as the No. 3 official at DOT.

“These comments are repugnant, completely unacceptable, and have no place in Governor Walker’s administration,” said Tom Evenson, spokesman for Walker. “Governor Walker condemns his views, and they do not represent the governor or his administration in any way.

Seven months later the issue has yet to be settled and records now show that Walker didn’t actually fire Kriesser. Instead, he allowed him to resign. So much for the utility of Act 10!

Ever audacious, Krieser has been fighting to get his old job back.  This, despite further negative publicity following the unveiling of a memo Krieser sent to his employees asking them not to volunteer information about free ID’s which could be used to comply with the state’s voter identification law.

Department of Transportation secretary Mark Gottlieb rejected Kriesser’s job request, saying, “The Department has concluded that, after this incident, you would not be able to gain the respect and trust of management, employees and customers that this is necessary to function effectively in a Career Executive management position.”

Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel writer Daniel Bice has documented Kriesser and his legal team’s efforts to get his job back. He continues to seek back pay, legal fees and removal of the infamous Facebook rant from his official file. He cites “horrific” conduct by public employees during the Act 10 battle as evidencde that his punishment was excessive.

Nice try, pal.
