MI Building Trades Go Big With “Pennies for Power” Donation

The Lansing Board of Water & Light has a program called “Pennies for Power” which allows customers and members of the community to donate money to helping less fortunate members of the community pay their bills.  According to the program’s website, this is usually done by customers rounding up their bill to the nearest dollar, rounding up and adding a dollar, or making a one-time contribution. This brings in $40,000 a year annually from over 4,000 customers.

But the Michigan Building and Construction Trades Council (MIBCTC) splashed the proverbial pot, presenting Pennies for Power with a $14,118.88 check.  It was the largest one-time donation in the program’s history.

Local building tradesmen and women donated five cents of their hourly wages from work performed on the REO Town Headquarters and Cogeneration Plant project.  With no administrative fees in the “Pennies for Power” program, each dollar goes to providing utility shut-off protection for Lansing residents.
